Lore & Background

The allegedly cursed town's history of disappearances and ghost and monster sightings is the basis of its tourist industry, so its adults, chief among them Fred's father Mayor Fred Jones Sr. and Sheriff Bronson Stone, are unhappy that the kids keep debunking the supernatural goings-on. Following cryptic hints from a faceless figure known as Mr. E, the gang unearths the legend of a cursed Conquistador treasure, the secret history of the founding Darrow Family, and the unsolved disappearance of four mystery-solving youths and their pet bird, the original Mystery Incorporated.

In the second season the two groups race to find the pieces of the planispheric disk that points the way to the treasure beneath the town. Romantic entanglements pull the kids apart: Shaggy struggles to put his new romance with Velma ahead of his friendship with Scooby, while Daphne pines for Fred, who is obsessed with building traps.

Reader's Guide

Each episode is called a chapter, numbered from 1 to 52 across both seasons. The series takes a tongue-in-cheek approach to the classic formula and is the first in the franchise to use real ghosts and monsters since The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo. The main characters were redesigned in a retro look resembling their original 1969 incarnations. Frank Welker voices Scooby-Doo and Fred, Mindy Cohn voices Velma, Grey DeLisle voices Daphne, and Matthew Lillard makes his animated debut as Shaggy, while Casey Kasem voiced Shaggy's father in five episodes. Returning characters include the Hex Girls and Vincent Van Ghoul.
