Guaibasaurus is a genus of early saurischian dinosaur from the Late Triassic of southern Brazil, specifically the Caturrita Formation in Rio Grande do Sul. Most studies place it as a sauropodomorph, though some researchers have argued it might be a theropod. In 2016, Gregory S. Paul estimated its length at about 2 meters (6.6 ft) and its weight at 10 kg (22 lbs), while a 2020 estimate by Molina-Pérez and Larramendi gave 3 meters (10 ft) and 35 kg (77 lbs).

The genus was first described in 1999 by José F. Bonaparte, Jorge Ferigolo, and Ana Maria Ribeiro, with the type species *Guaibasaurus candelariensis*. The generic name comes from the Rio Guaíba hydrographic basin, where the holotype was found as part of the "Pró-Guaíba Project," a program supporting Triassic fossil research. The specific name honors Candelária, a city near the fossil site.

The holotype (MCN PV2355) is a well-preserved partial postcranial skeleton, and the paratype (MCN PV2356) is an articulated, nearly complete left hindlimb. Both were discovered at the "Sesmaria do Pinhal 2" locality near Candelária, in the upper part of the Candelária Sequence (Caturrita Formation). Two additional specimens were later referred to *G. candelariensis*: UFRGS PV0725T, an articulated and nearly complete postcranial skeleton missing one forelimb, both feet, and the neck; and MCN PV 10112, a block containing articulated parts and isolated elements, including a partial hand. These came from the "Linha São Luiz" locality near Faxinal do Soturno, also in the upper Candelária Sequence.

All specimens were collected from the lower part of the Caturrita Formation (Rosário do Sul Group, Paraná Basin), or alternatively the uppermost Santa Maria 2 Sequence. This dates to the early Norian stage of the Late Triassic. Uranium-lead dating places the Caturrita Formation at about 225.42 million years ago, less than 10 million years younger than the Santa Maria and Ischigualasto Formations, where the earliest dinosaurs are known.

Specimen UFRGS PV0725T is articulated with its hindlimbs tucked under its body and forelimbs flexed to the side. Though most of the neck is missing, the preserved base curves to the left, suggesting the whole neck was bent toward the left side.

A Persistent Taxonomic Puzzle

Since its 1999 description, Guaibasaurus has occupied an ambiguous position in dinosaur family trees. The original authors, José Bonaparte and colleagues, regarded it as a possible basal theropod and erected the family Guaibasauridae to house it. In 2007, Bonaparte and team noted strong similarities with another early Brazilian dinosaur, Saturnalia, and grouped both under Guaibasauridae as a primitive saurischian assemblage. Even so, Bonaparte leaned toward interpreting these animals as more theropod-like than prosauropod-like. Subsequent phylogenetic studies have not reached consensus. Some analyses continue to recover Guaibasaurus as a basal theropod, while others place it among the earliest sauropodomorphs. A novel hypothesis linking silesaurids recovers it as a sauropodomorph allied with the coeval Unaysaurus and Macrocollum rather than with Saturnalia, effectively making Unaysauridae a junior synonym of Guaibasauridae. That interpretation was later supported in the formal description of the theropod Erythrovenator jacuiensis. The debate remains open, reflecting how little material is available to resolve such basal relationships.

A Bird-Like Resting Posture

One of the most striking features of Guaibasaurus comes from specimen UFRGS PV0725T, which was preserved in a life-like pose. In this skeleton the hindlimbs are tucked beneath the body while the forelimbs are flexed outward to the sides. Although most cervical vertebrae are missing, the few preserved at the base of the neck curve distinctly to the left, indicating the whole neck was bent toward the animal's left side. This configuration closely mirrors the familiar resting posture of modern birds, in which the legs fold up under the torso and the neck tucks to one side. The same tuck-under stance is otherwise documented primarily in advanced maniraptoran dinosaurs, the group most closely related to birds, and has also been noted in the dinosauriform Saltopus.
