Dromicosaurus is a poorly understood genus of sauropodomorph dinosaur known from a fragmentary skeleton found in South Africa, dating to either the Late Triassic or Early Jurassic. The only species assigned to it is *D. gracilis*. The name, Greek for 'quick-walking lizard', was chosen because its slender legs suggest it could move faster than related dinosaurs like *Eucnemesaurus*.

The sole specimen was unearthed by paleontologist Egbert Cornelis Nicolaas van Hoepen near Noupoortsnek, along the road from Bethlehem to Clarens. Much of the two pubic bones had already been exposed by weathering. During excavation, the shaft of the tibia broke apart, but van Hoepen immediately reassembled and glued it. The specimen, catalogued as TM 119 (or TM 119a), became part of the collection of the Ditsong National Museum of Natural History (then the Transvaal Museum) in Pretoria, where van Hoepen worked. He described it in 1920 as a new genus and species.

The remains come from the Elliot Formation, though it is unclear whether from the Upper Triassic or Lower Jurassic section. Van Hoepen reported that the specimen includes a nearly complete neck vertebra (possibly the fourth or fifth), about eight poorly preserved tail vertebrae from the front of the tail, parts of the humerus and radius, well-preserved pubes, poorly preserved ischia, a weathered femur, a well-preserved right tibia and fibula, and several foot bones including the first three metatarsals. The femur measures 49.5 cm long. In 1932, Friedrich von Huene argued that the supposed neck vertebra was actually a back vertebra, though he later identified it as a cervical vertebra.

Van Hoepen classified *Dromicosaurus* within the Anchisauridae, distinguishing it from the Plateosauridae—both groups then considered theropods but now recognized as basal sauropodomorphs. He compared it to several other taxa, including *Massospondylus carinatus*, *M. harriesi*, and others, noting differences in the femur and tibia: the fourth trochanter was positioned higher on the bone in *Dromicosaurus*, and the lower end of the tibia had different proportions. In 1932, Friedrich von Huene argued the animal was closely allied to Massospondylus and Thecodontosaurus, and he went further, suggesting that the high position of the fourth trochanter combined with the short forelimb implied strongly bent knees and a bipedal posture. By 1976, Peter Galton and Michael Cluver had synonymised D. gracilis with Massospondylus harriesi, following an earlier suggestion by John Attridge. Michael Cooper took a different tack in 1981, lumping it under M. carinatus instead. The pelvic bones are represented by two pubes in good condition alongside more fragmentary ischia. Several foot bones survive as well, including the first three metatarsals. The overall preservation is uneven: some elements like the pubes and lower leg bones are in excellent shape, while others such as the tail vertebrae and the femur are heavily degraded. This patchwork of bones, all recovered from a single site in the Free State, constitutes the entirety of what is known about this enigmatic Late Triassic or Early Jurassic dinosaur.
