The holotype of Gresslyosaurus ingens, consisting of postcranial remains, was discovered in the Knollenmergel (the Swiss equivalent of the Trossingen Formation) of northern Switzerland around 1840 by Amanz Gressly. No widely recognized additional collection of the holotype occurred between 1915 and 1942. The species was formally named and described by Rütimeyer in 1857, after an earlier attempt to name it 'Dinosaurus gresslyi' in 1856 was deemed a nomen nudum because it appeared only in an abstract.
Other species were later described: G. plieningeri (Huene, 1905) from the Marnes de Châlins Formation of France and the Trossingen Formation of Germany; G. robustus (Huene, 1905) from the Trossingen Formation of Germany; and G. torgeri (Jaeckel, 1911) from a Plateosaurus bonebed in the same German formation. The taxonomy of Gresslyosaurus has been debated: Lydekker (1888) synonymized it with Zanclodon, but von Huene (1908) separated it as a sauropodomorph. Later authors like Galton (1976, 1985, 1986) synonymized it with Plateosaurus, while Moser (2003) and Rauhut et al. (2020) argued for its generic distinctness.
