Lore & Background

The Last Spell is set in a dark fantasy post-apocalyptic world ravaged by war and magic. A deranged mage discovered a spell capable of destroying entire cities and cast it on the town of Glintfein, annihilating all life including the royal family. In retaliation, the royal family's mages replicated the spell and used it on nearby cities, leading every nation to acquire the devastating magic. The ruins of destroyed cities emitted a purple mist from which undead corpses marched. Survivors gathered under a fighter known as The Commander, who protected mages working on a spell to banish all magic from the world. The Commander eventually completed the magic circles in survivor havens, but was revealed to be the original mage who destroyed Glintfein. He had invented the city-destroying spell to stop wars, then developed the last spell as penance. He struck a deal with the twin gods Schaden and Freude, knowing they planned to use his body as a conduit. The Commander returned to Glintfein, defeated the gods, and cast the last spell, absorbing all magic and the gods into himself, ascending to godhood and using his powers to save other worlds in eternal penance.

Reader's Guide

The Last Spell is a tactical role-playing game where players control randomly generated heroes defending a town against undead hordes. The game features an asymmetric imbalance: players start with three heroes against hundreds of enemies. After a tutorial in Swampfurt, players select towns on a world map, each with a unique two-dimensional isometric battlefield centered on a magic circle. Players can choose Omens—positive buffs lasting the full map. Each map has day and night phases: during the day, players spend gold and materials to build, repair, purchase heroes, and prepare; at night, turn-based battles alternate between the player's turn and the undead horde's turn. Heroes' actions are determined by equipment rather than character classes, allowing high customization. The player wins by destroying all enemies each night; losing occurs if the magic circle is destroyed. Each night increases enemy count and variety, with randomized enemy types requiring adaptation. A boss battle concludes each town map. As a roguelite, the game features a progressive metagame: players earn currency from defeated enemies and nights survived, used to unlock Omens, weapons, armor, buildings, and rewards for specific actions. Two DLC packs—Dwarves of Runenberg and Elves of Amberwald—added races, maps, weapons, and mechanics such as Runestones, Stone Medals, and a Seeds trap system. A third DLC, Tales of Torment, was announced for early 2026.
