Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong

A narrative RPG about three vampires investigating conspiracies in Boston.

In Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong, players take on the roles of three century-old vampires from different clans, each with unique supernatural abilities. The game is a single-player, narrative-driven RPG developed by Big Bad Wolf and published by Nacon, released in May 2022 for Windows, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X/S, with a Nintendo Switch version following in September 2023. It adapts the fifth edition of the tabletop game Vampire: The Masquerade and fits into the broader World of Darkness setting.

The story unfolds in Boston, where vampires secretly live among humans—a concealment known as the Masquerade, enforced by the Camarilla sect. After a violent attack during the reunification of Boston and Hartford, orchestrated by Prince Hazel Iversen, key Camarilla members are killed or captured by the Society of St Leopold (a Vatican-backed vampire-hunting sect) and the Special Affairs Division (a government agency). The three protagonists—Galeb (a Ventrue enforcer), Emem (a Toreador seductress), and Leysha (a Malkavian with madness-inducing insight)—each have separate missions: Galeb must assassinate Monsignor Stanford, a leader of the Second Inquisition; Emem infiltrates enemy headquarters to corrupt their vampire database; Leysha seeks her staked and abducted daughter. The game offers multiple endings based on which characters survive and the choices made.

Gameplay emphasizes moral dilemmas with no clear right answers, and players customize characters by upgrading disciplines and stats to suit their playstyle. Supernatural abilities must be used discreetly around humans to avoid breaking the Masquerade. Skills like lockpicking and hacking also affect exploration and interactions.

The game was designed by Clément Plantier at Big Bad Wolf, a Cyanide subsidiary. Development drew from the 1990s tabletop sourcebooks Dark Colony and Giovanni Chronicles for Boston’s portrayal, updated for a modern setting. While referencing past material and the Bloodlines video game, the developers aimed to make it accessible to newcomers. Announced in May 2019 for a 2021 release, it was delayed twice—first to February 2022, then to May 2022—due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After launch, PlayStation 4 owners could not upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version despite box advertising; Nacon called this a mistake, as the game is not cross-gen.

Lore & Background

Swansong is set in Boston within the World of Darkness, where vampires exist hidden from humanity—a practice called the Masquerade, upheld by the Camarilla sect. The story begins after a shootout during the reunification of Boston and Hartford domains, negotiated by the new Camarilla prince Hazel Iversen. Highly influential vampires were destroyed or captured by attackers who knew their weaknesses, later revealed to be the Society of St Leopold (a vampire-hunting sect funded by the Holy See) and the Special Affairs Division (a government agency). The three protagonists—Galeb (clan Ventrue), Emem (clan Toreador), and Leysha (clan Malkavian)—each have specific missions: Galeb must assassinate Monsignor Stanford, leader of the Second Inquisition; Emem must infiltrate enemy HQ to corrupt their database; Leysha pursues her abducted daughter. The game features numerous endings depending on character survival and player actions.

Reader's Guide

Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong is notable as a video game adaptation of the fifth edition of the tabletop role-playing game, updating the 1990s Boston setting from Dark Colony and Giovanni Chronicles for a present-day audience. Developed by Big Bad Wolf, a branch of Cyanide, the game focuses on player choice and consequences rather than direct combat, incorporating some tabletop mechanics while remaining approachable for newcomers. Its reception was mixed: critics praised the RPG mechanics, player freedom, and lore, but criticized the gameplay, narrative, and lack of polish. Reviewers noted strengths in logic puzzles and deduction, but found the writing stilted, puzzles unimaginative, and conversation mechanics poorly conceived. The game's significance lies in its attempt to deliver a story-driven vampire experience with meaningful moral choices, though technical issues and uneven design limited its impact. It stands as one of several video game entries in the World of Darkness franchise, referencing past material like Bloodlines while aiming to tell an original story.
