Roadwarden is set on a dangerous peninsula where the player, as the roadwarden, must bring commerce and security to scattered human settlements. The game's world is presented through a sectioned interface: an illustration pane on the left shows a map or area illustration with fog of war, while the right pane displays text and clickable dialogue or action choices, occasionally allowing typed word prompts. A rightmost section shows player stats including date, time until dusk, vitality, nourishment, armor, appearance, and pneuma (mana for magic-based characters). Ambient music changes to match the story's mood.

The player can choose from multiple character classes—fighter, mage, or scholar—each offering unique knowledge and options, as well as biographical details such as in-game religion that affect NPC interactions. The game uses an open-world travel system, allowing exploration at the player's own pace while mapping the peninsula. Quests are collected in a journal that tracks plot developments. Survival elements require balancing nutrition, health, personal hygiene, and currency (called dragon bones or rings), which is needed for items, weapons, lodging, and boarding for the player and their horse. On the standard difficulty, the player has up to 40 in-game days to complete the mission before returning to the home city of Hovlavan.
