Loop8: Summer of Gods

Relive August 1983 to save a town from demonic Kegai.

Loop8: Summer of Gods

Loop8: Summer of Gods is a story-driven Japanese role-playing game from developer Sieg Games, published by Marvelous Entertainment and XSeed Games. It launched in June 2023 on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows.

The gameplay centers on turn-based combat and heavy narrative progression. Players advance the story by reading text and picking responses from dialogue trees, with multiple paths and endings shaped by those choices. A calendar system governs time management—each action or decision consumes units of time, and characters’ moods and reactions shift depending on when the player interacts with them.

The story unfolds in the fictional Japanese town of Ashihara, set in an alternate 1983 where humanity battles for survival against demonic creatures called Kegai. The protagonist, Nini, is a teenage boy who grew up on a space station destroyed by the Kegai. As the sole survivor, he gains the ability “demon sight,” letting him perceive others’ thoughts and emotions. He can also reset events—either through failure to save the world or by manually looping back via a specific character. Nini arrives in Ashihara in August, seeking refuge, and spends his time building connections to locate the Kegai before they destroy the town. The title “Loop8” refers to his repeated reliving of the eighth month.

On August 1, 1983, Nini reaches Ashihara and is greeted by Konoha, a relative from his Earth family, the Oyama—an ancient clan of sorcerers wielding major political influence in Japan. The next day, Konoha takes him to school to finalize enrollment, where he meets Kuni, his homeroom teacher. On August 3, Nini attends supplementary classes and notices a giant transparent sphere floating over the town’s mountain, though no one else seems to see it. During first period, a student with fox ears and a tail, Beni, announces an imminent Kegai attack. Kuni and a girl named Micchi ignore her, while another boy, Saru, drags Beni away; Konoha dismisses it as a quirk. Kuni then introduces another new student, Ichika, who claims to protect everyone’s peace. Konoha reacts negatively. After school, Nini visits a shrine and meets Musasa, a flying squirrel god and messenger of higher Shinto deities, who gives him a blessing from the goddess Sakuya and advises checking mini-shrines around town for more blessings.

Reader's Guide

Loop8: Summer of Gods is significant for its intricate time-loop structure, where the player experiences the same month repeatedly, with events diverging based on choices and relationships. The game features a calendar system and time management, with character moods and reactions varying depending on when they are addressed.
