Lost Soul Aside is an action-adventure role-playing game released in 2025. It was developed by Ultizero Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The story follows Kaser, who sets out to rescue his sister Louisa and all of humanity from an enemy known as the Voidrax. What began as a solo project by developer Yang Bing later became part of Sony's China Hero Project, expanding into a full team effort.
In terms of gameplay, Lost Soul Aside is a single-player, third-person action-adventure RPG. Players control Kaser, who is accompanied by a companion named Arena. Arena can transform into weapons and other elements used in combat and exploration. Kaser can wield a sword, greatsword, poleblade, and scythe. He can also unleash Arena powers, which are abilities with offensive and other effects. The game follows a linear path with a few open areas. A character named Liana serves as the manual save system and hub at certain points; she frequently meets Kaser during his journey and records his adventures for her novel. There is also a challenge mode called Surge of Voidrax, which consists of a hundred waves of enemies.
The story begins with Kaser and his younger sister Louisa orphaned during a war between the Empire of Celestria and the Kingdom of Frosthold. They later join GLIMMER, a resistance group led by Selene, to fight against the Empire's tyranny. During a festival in the capital city of Primarius, GLIMMER attempts to inspire the populace to rise up, but the mission is interrupted by the Voidrax—mysterious invaders from beyond dimensions—who devastate the capital and steal the souls of its inhabitants. In the chaos, Kaser falls into a vast underground laboratory and meets Lord Arena, a dragon-like Voidrax imprisoned there. Kaser merges with Arena's essence, gaining its power, and they escape to the surface. Vesper of the Holy Order drags Louisa into the onslaught to save himself, and her soul is captured. Kaser and his companions then set out to save Louisa and all of humanity.
Kaser, Arena, and Gethya travel to Mount Salvation for answers. Kaser and Arena fight the four Lords and free them from corrupted Voidrax energy. Their journey leads them to Queen Seleria, who guards the seal imprisoning the Voidrax, including their leader Aramon. Aramon once tried to conquer the world and seize its Life Nexus.

Reader's Guide
Lost Soul Aside is notable as a project that originated as a solo endeavor by Yang Bing in 2014 while he was a graduate student at Dongguk University in South Korea. After an initial reveal via a promotional video on his YouTube channel in July 2016, Sony took notice and reached out, leading to a meeting in Shanghai later that year. In October 2016, Sony offered the game a place in its China Hero Project, providing funding and technical support. Yang founded Ultizero Games in January 2017 with support from Sony and its partners, and Sony officially became the game's publisher in 2022. The game's long development cycle was attributed largely to early inexperience and the time required to build a capable team. Tatsuo Eguchi, President of Sony Interactive Entertainment Shanghai, stated that Lost Soul Aside was very significant for the start of the China Hero Project, as it led to the idea that Sony might help creators achieve their dreams by providing know-how and support. The game is part of the China Hero Project Phase 1 launched in 2016. The story outline always involved Kaser and his dragon companion Arena, but their relationship and experiences gradually took shape after the studio formed. Additional characters as companions were introduced to make the world feel richer, marking a shift from the 2016 trailer's relatively stronger sense of loneliness.

The Vision Behind the Lands Between
FromSoftware set out to build an open-world experience rooted in the DNA of the Dark Souls franchise, and director Hidetaka Miyazaki saw in American fantasy author George R. R. Martin the ideal partner to elevate the narrative. Miyazaki had long admired Martin's previous work and believed his storytelling sensibility would make the game's lore more accessible than the narratives of FromSoftware's earlier titles. Martin was granted considerable creative freedom to shape the backstory of the world, while Miyazaki himself served as lead writer for the in-game narrative structure. The development team poured enormous effort into environmental scale and story, constructing multiple large structures across the world to support the ambitious scope. Published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, Elden Ring launched on February 25, 2022, across PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, delivering a customizable protagonist on a quest to mend the shattered Elden Ring and claim the title of Elden Lord.
A World Built for Exploration and Combat
Elden Ring casts players into a vast open world from a third-person vantage point, where six distinct main regions await discovery. Limgrave stretches across grassy plains dotted with ancient ruins, while Caelid presents a hostile wasteland teeming with undead creatures. Players traverse these landscapes primarily on the spectral steed Torrent, though fast travel between checkpoints offers a quicker alternative outside of combat. Beyond the main areas, hidden dungeons, catacombs, tunnels, and caves conceal additional bosses and valuable loot. Combat is deeply layered: players can fight in melee or at range, dodge or block with shields, cast spells via staves or sacred seals, and even employ stealth to land critical hits from concealment. Weapons gain new abilities through Ashes of War, swappable enchantments that add special combat arts. Checkpoints called sites of grace let players allocate runes into attribute growth, swap spells, or change weapon arts. The stakes are high, however, since dying drops all collected runes at the point of death, and a second death before retrieval means permanent loss.
Critical Acclaim and Commercial Dominance
Elden Ring swept the awards circuit, collecting multiple Game of the Year honors and earning a place on numerous greatest-of-all-time lists. Critics singled out the seamless open-world design, the depth of its interconnected gameplay systems, and the atmospheric setting as standout achievements. Commercially, the title became a phenomenon, surpassing thirty million copies sold and cementing its status among the best-selling video games ever released. The momentum continued well past launch: the downloadable expansion Shadow of the Erdtree, which sends the player into the mysterious Land of Shadow, arrived in June 2024 to comparable critical praise and moved over ten million units. In 2025, FromSoftware followed up with Elden Ring Nightreign, a spinoff that shifts the focus squarely onto multiplayer experiences. The franchise's reach is expanding beyond gaming as well, with a film adaptation currently in production and targeted for a 2028 theatrical release, signaling that the Lands Between has become a cultural touchpoint far beyond the console and PC.
Cooperation and Conflict in an Online World
Elden Ring's multiplayer layer adds a social dimension to its solo-focused design, enabling both cooperative and competitive play over the internet. In co-op mode, a player places a summon sign on the ground, which becomes visible to online companions who possess the matching item. Once a friend interacts with that sign, they are pulled into the host's world to tackle bosses or explore together. This partnership persists until the area's boss falls, the host perishes, or the summoned player is either defeated or sent home by the host, at which point they return to their own world. On the competitive side, the same summon-sign infrastructure supports player-versus-player duels, allowing one player to challenge another to a direct confrontation. This blend of cooperative boss-fighting and adversarial invasions gives the Lands Between a persistent social texture, encouraging players to return not only for the narrative and world design but also for the unpredictable encounters with other humans navigating the same sprawling terrain.
