Farmagia

Grow monsters, battle in mazes, and save the underworld.

Farmagia

Farmagia (stylized in all caps) is a Japanese action role-playing game from developer and publisher Marvelous, featuring character designs by manga artist Hiro Mashima. It launched worldwide on November 1, 2024, for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Steam. A Bridge-produced anime television adaptation ran from January to March 2025.

The single-player game blends action role-playing with farm life simulation. Players grow monsters from seeds found in dungeons called mazes. On the farm, tilling and watering cost Farmagia Points (FP), which refill after completing a maze. Fertilizers bought from the magic shop speed up monster growth and reduce the in-game days until harvest.

Two monster types are raised on the farm: Battle Buddies, used for fighting in mazes, and Research Buddies, which grant points for purchasing skills and farming or battle upgrades. Agri-Buddies, crafted at the magic shop, handle farming tasks without using FP or resources. Harvested Battle Buddies train on the ranch to improve individual stats; training effectiveness depends on monster motivation, which drops with each stat increase and recovers when fed treats.

In mazes, players control a team of four characters with forty to sixty Battle Buddies split into four unit types: close-range attackers, long-range attackers, buffing and debuffing support, and healing and protection formations. Each unit is assigned a button to attack a targeted enemy, reducing health and stamina. Battle Buddies also perform Unite Blitzes (combining one unit into a stronger United Buddy), Legion Attacks (all monsters strike a target when its stamina depletes), and Fusion Summons (all units merge into a Fusion Buddy that damages every enemy on screen). Fairy Skills, obtained from fairies in pods or bought from shopkeeper Charlot, grant temporary boosts to characters and monsters and reset after leaving a maze.

The story unfolds across twelve chapters with 2D visual novel-style cutscenes. Progressing through the story lets players form pacts with Elemental Spirits, unlocking new Fusion Buddies. An affection system allows upgrading Fusion Buddies by deepening relationships with each monster’s corresponding Elemental Spirit.

The game is set in Felicidad, an underworld land where human-like denizens magically farm monsters for battle and society; these farmers are called Farmagia.

Lore & Background

Farmagia is set in Felicidad, a land in the underworld where human-like denizens magically farm and grow monsters for battle and society, with these farmers known as Farmagia. The denizens live atop continent-sized monsters that serve as Felicidad's landmasses, with the town of Centvelt on the continent Avrion serving as the game's central hub. The continents are protected by six Elemental Spirits, who strengthen any Farmagia with whom they form a pact. The player characters are a party of young Farmagia orphans from Centvelt, including the bold leader Ten and his childhood friends Arche, Leii, Chica, Emero, and Anzar, along with a fairy named Lookie-Loo. They are guided by Nares, Avrion's altruistic ruling general, and Dentro, the orphanage's elderly caretaker.

The primary antagonists are Nares' fellow generals from the Oración Seis, who govern the other continents and oversee monster production on behalf of Felicidad's ruler, the Magus Diluculum. Following Diluculum's death from old age, the tyrannical archmage Glaza establishes an oppressive regime as the new Magus, while Nares leads Avrion in rebellion. Ten's party battles Glaza's forces and frees the other continents, eventually uncovering a deeper conspiracy involving Diluculum's staged death, a curse on Arche, and a spell called the Harvest Festival that reaps souls. The story culminates in a confrontation with Diluculum, who intends to consume Felicidad's souls to kill God, and the party's awakening as the Dragons of Centvelt.

Reader's Guide

Farmagia represents a niche intersection of action role-playing and farm simulation, notable for its character designs by Hiro Mashima and its release across multiple platforms in 2024. The game's mechanics center on growing monsters from seeds acquired in dungeons called mazes, with a stamina system (Farmagia Points) that replenishes upon completing a maze. Players cultivate Battle Buddies for combat, Research Buddies for skill points, and Agri-Buddies for automated farming. In mazes, the player controls a team of four characters with up to sixty Battle Buddies divided into four unit types, using special attacks like Unite Blitzes, Legion Attacks, and Fusion Summons. The game also features an affection system tied to Elemental Spirits and Fairy Skills that provide temporary benefits.

The Nintendo Switch version launched at #8 on Japanese charts, selling 4,296 physical copies in its first three days, making it the only new release to chart in the top ten that week. The game received 'mixed or average' reviews according to r. Its legacy includes a subsequent anime adaptation by Bridge, which aired from January to March 2025, and free downloadable content in the form of weekly buddy skins released throughout November 2024. Farmagia's blend of farming and action RPG elements, along with its distinctive art style and narrative, positions it as a cult title within Marvelous's catalog.
