GreedFall: The Dying World

A prequel set in Gacane, following an islander's journey to the mainland.

GreedFall: The Dying World

GreedFall: The Dying World is an action role-playing game from Spiders and Nacon, released as a prequel to the 2019 title GreedFall. It entered early access in September 2024, with the full version arriving on PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S in March 2026. This was Spiders' final project; the studio closed in April 2026 after an unsuccessful sale attempt.

The game is played from a third-person perspective. Players create and control a member of Teer Fradee's indigenous tribes, who is kidnapped by mainland colonizers. The open world of Gacane is fully explorable. Objectives can be tackled through direct combat, stealth, or diplomacy, depending on the player's skills. Combat offers three modes: Tactical (full team control), Hybrid (some automated actions), and Focused (protagonist only). Party members have distinct abilities—some excel in melee, others in spotting traps from a distance.

Development involved a team of fewer than 100 people at Spiders. Building on the first game's commercial success, the studio incorporated player feedback by deepening the lore and creating a playable setting only hinted at before. The narrative flips the original: an islander journeys to the mainland. Lead writer Jehanne Rousseau described the world as fantasy "based on history," telling "a story about political schemes and murders" that is "more dirty than heroic." Art director Cyril Tahmassebi noted the team aimed to enhance the "Rembrandt-inspired art design and golden century feel," with the expanded setting allowing more factions and locations.

The combat system was overhauled to make party members more involved. Unlike the first game, where companions were AI-controlled, players can now issue direct commands, aiming for a team-based feel. The game drew heavy inspiration from BioWare's Dragon Age: Origins and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, with extensive work on companion characters.

Announced in May 2022, the early access version (including the first chapter) launched on Windows on 24 September 2024. The full release, along with console versions, followed on 10 March 2026. In April 2026, reports emerged that Nacon had tried and failed to sell Spiders, leading to the studio's closure after 18 years.

Initial reactions to the early access were mixed.

Lore & Background

GreedFall: The Dying World is set in the continent of Gacane, an open world that can be freely explored. The player assumes control of a member of an indigenous tribe on the island of Teer Fradee who is abducted by forces of the mainland seeking to colonize the island. The game flips the narrative of the first game, telling a story of an islander venturing into the mainland. Lead writer Jehanne Rousseau described the setting as a fantasy world 'based on history' that tells 'a story about political schemes and murders,' adding that the world was 'more dirty than heroic.' Art director Cyril Tahmassebi noted the team wanted to improve the 'Rembrandt-inspired art design and golden century feel' of the first game, and the expanded setting allowed for more factions and locations.

The game features a character creator and offers multiple approaches to objectives: direct combat, stealth, or diplomacy. Combat includes three modes: Tactical (controlling the entire team), Hybrid (automating some team moves), and Focused (concentrating solely on the protagonist). Different characters have distinct skills, such as melee combat proficiency or the ability to discern traps from a distance. The combat system was completely revamped to make party members more involved; unlike the first game, players can directly issue commands to companions, inspired by BioWare's Dragon Age: Origins and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

Reader's Guide

GreedFall: The Dying World holds significance as the final release from Spiders, a studio that operated for 18 years before being shut down in April 2026 after publisher Nacon failed to find a buyer. The game was developed by a team of fewer than 100 people, incorporating player feedback from the original GreedFall, which had been a commercial success. Changes included deepening the lore and introducing an explorable setting only hinted at in the first game. The early access version, released in September 2024, included only the first chapter and received mixed initial responses. Upon full release in March 2026, the game received 'mixed or average' reviews on Metacritic, while OpenCritic assessed it as receiving fair approval, recommended by 19% of critics. The game's legacy is tied to its role as the studio's swan song, representing Spiders' final attempt to build on the foundation of its predecessor with a revamped combat system and a narrative that reversed the perspective of the original.
