Gothic 1 Remake
A remake of the 2001 classic, released in 2026.
Gothic 1 Remake is an action role-playing game that came out in 2026, built by Alkimia Interactive and published by THQ Nordic. It reimagines the 2001 title Gothic, which was made by Piranha Bytes. The game launched on PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S on June 5, 2026. Critics gave it mixed feedback, but it still moved half a million copies in its first week.
The game plays from a third-person perspective in a fantasy open world. You control a nameless prisoner dumped into a penal mining colony called the Valley of Mines, sealed off by a magical barrier. Like the original, there’s no minimap, and your character starts with no skills. Lockpicking works similarly to the old game but is shown in a different way.
Development kicked off after THQ Nordic bought Piranha Bytes in May 2019. Piranha Bytes didn’t want to make another Gothic, so they stuck with other projects like ELEX. THQ Nordic’s Spanish branch, THQ Barcelona, put out a playable teaser in December 2019 and ran a public survey to see what players thought. By March 2023, the demo had been downloaded over 180,000 times, with more than 30,000 responses—mostly mixed. Over 90% of players said they wanted a full remake, so THQ Nordic announced production in February 2020. The teaser was scrapped, and a complete reboot got the green light after feedback demanded something closer to the original.
In March 2021, Alkimia Interactive was set up in Barcelona specifically to make this remake. Some original Gothic developers joined, including the composer, a dialogue writer, and a programmer. By 2023, about 45 people were working on it, growing to over 50 in 2024. Every employee had to play the original game. A big focus was NPC behavior and routines. They used 20-to-30-minute motion capture recordings, chopped into sequences and sorted—they called this “motion magic.” The team spent a lot of time on iteration. Controls and the user interface got upgrades to make the game easier to pick up. Lead producer Reinhard Pollice said combat and skill systems stuck close to the original, unlike the playable teaser.
The game world, based on the original, ended up 10 to 30 percent bigger because of better design options and higher detail. Some spots in the original weren’t fully fleshed out, so the team tried to tap that potential, making certain areas denser.

Lore & Background
The game is set in a fantasy open world, where the player controls a prisoner sent to a penal mining colony called the Valley of Mines, surrounded by a magical barrier. The nameless hero navigates without a minimap and starts without any skills. Lock picking was developed similarly to the original but presented differently. The game world is 10–30% larger than the original, with some locations made more dense. New quests based on camp affiliation were developed, and chapters 2 through 5, trimmed in the original due to budget constraints, were expanded. More content about orcs and their culture was added, with their language expanded and professionalized with the help of a linguist. A tattoo artist also advised the developers.
Reader's Guide
Gothic 1 Remake is notable as a faithful yet expanded recreation of a foundational 2001 role-playing game, developed by a studio founded specifically for the project. The development process involved extensive community feedback, including a playable teaser and surveys that led to a 'complete reboot' closer to the original. The game's mixed reception reflects praise for its atmosphere, exploration, and progression, alongside criticism of its combat system, balancing, and technical aspects. Its sales of half a million units in the first week indicate strong commercial interest despite critical division. The remake's use of Unreal Engine, AI-generated NPC faces, and expanded systems such as weapon smithing and cooking represent modern technical approaches to updating a classic title. The inclusion of original voice actors for German, Polish, and Russian dubbing, and a reworked English localization, aimed to preserve the franchise's tone.
