Fate/Samurai Remnant
A samurai's journey through the Waxing Moon Ritual.
Fate/Samurai Remnant is an action role-playing game from Omega Force and Kou Shibusawa, published by Koei Tecmo. It launched on September 28, 2023, for Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. Players step into the role of Miyamoto Iori, a samurai who studied under the legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. Critics generally received the game well, highlighting its strong character writing and engaging combat.
The gameplay blends hack-and-slash action with role-playing elements, borrowing some ideas from musou-style titles. Dodging and targeting enemy weaknesses are key, and Iori can switch between multiple stances on the fly. He wields dual katanas, a common weapon for Edo-period samurai. Players can also command their servant to launch special attacks and combos, and in certain moments, take full control of that servant. The game lets players explore recreated districts of Edo, including Yoshiwara, Kanda, and Akasaka.
The story centers on Iori, a peacekeeping ronin chosen for the Waxing Moon Ritual—a variation of the Holy Grail War. He summons a Saber-class servant named Yamato Takeru. Together, they ally with Takao Dayu and her Berserker-class servant, who is actually Iori’s late master Miyamoto Musashi, in exchange for information on other Masters and servants. After investigating Yui Shousetsu and her Rider-class servant, and fighting Chiemon and his Lancer-class servant, Iori and Saber are rescued by Zheng Chenggong and his Archer-class servant Zhou Yu. Zheng proposes an alliance to deal with a problematic Assassin-class servant. Their investigation leads them to Assassin’s master, Dorothea Coyett, who launches a powerful attack on the Saber-Berserker-Archer alliance, injuring Iori. This triggers the appearance of the Pseudo-Servant Ototachibana-hime, who has taken residence in Kaya’s body. Shousetsu detects this and sends Chiemon and Lancer to capture her.
Iori and Saber chase Chiemon and fight Lancer at Kanagawa, but the battle is interrupted by Rogue Servants corrupted by Tsuchimikado, the Waxing Moon’s overseer. Saber is affected, but Iori saves them in time. Archer, however, begins massacring Akasaka and sacrifices himself. Assassin submits to brainwashing and betrays Dorothea, who then allies with Iori and Saber.
