Lore & Background
SpellForce 2: Shadow Wars takes place on the high-fantasy world of Eo, which was shattered by a cataclysmic event called the Convocation, leaving the remaining landmass as floating islands connected by a portal network. The player assumes the role of the Soul Carrier, a young member of the Shaikah—immortal warriors created by the alchemist Malacay through a blood pact with the dragon patriarch Ur. Malacay sought to defy the gods and create a force called the Malar, but his efforts corrupted his spirit, and he was eventually defeated by Eo's gods. The Shaikah went into isolation due to fear from other races, and Malacay's spirit curses them by returning once per generation to possess one of their number.
Reader's Guide
The game's campaign can be played solo or with up to three players via online or local area network. Players create a custom avatar with no initial class definition, allocating skill points into combat and magic skill trees to unlock abilities and equipment. The real-time strategy component features three factions—Realm, Clans, and Pact—each with unique units including a Titan. Resources (stone, silver, lenya) are gathered by workers to build structures and train troops, with army size limited by farms and racial upgrades. The campaign involves visiting inter-linked islands with main and side quests, using Journey Stones for fast travel. Companions join the party, some permanent and some temporary; death of party members requires revival within three minutes or at an Altar of Life using lenya. A remastered version including the first expansion was released in April 2017, and a sequel, SpellForce 3, followed on 7 December 2017.
