Lore & Background

Rock Band expands on Harmonix's Guitar Hero series by adding drum and microphone peripherals, allowing up to four players to play lead and bass guitar, drums, and vocals. The game shipped with 58 songs on disc for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 2 and 3, while the Wii version included 5 additional songs. The European version added 9 extra songs. Players can expand their music library on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 via weekly downloadable content. Songs from the Rock Band soundtrack can be exported to Rock Band 2 and Rock Band 3 with a transfer license, though certain songs like 'Enter Sandman', 'Monsoon', 'Paranoid', and 'Run to the Hills' cannot be exported. Exports into Rock Band 4 were enabled in January 2016 for those who had already exported into Rock Band 2 or 3.

Reader's Guide

Players can play Rock Band alone through Career mode for lead guitar, drums, and vocals, earning in-game money to purchase new outfits and instruments. Each of the 45 songs has a difficulty ranking for each instrument part and a total band difficulty across nine tiers. Songs must be completed in each tier to unlock the next. Once unlocked, songs can be played in Quickplay, multiplayer (competitive and co-operative) off- or online. Each instrument part can be played at Easy, Medium, Hard, or Expert difficulty. A total of 13 bonus songs can be unlocked through Career mode, featuring bands formed by Harmonix employees and local bands from Cambridge, Massachusetts, or Boston, with exceptions including Flyleaf, Crooked X, and Mother Hips. 'Timmy and the Lords of the Underworld' comes from the fictional band featured in South Park.
