Peñarol is considered one of the most prestigious football clubs in South America. It was recognized as the best South American club of the 20th century by the IFFHS in 2009. The club has won the Copa Libertadores five times (1960, 1961, 1966, 1982, 1987) and the Intercontinental Cup three times (1961, 1966, 1982). Its main rival is Club Nacional de Football, with their first meeting on 15 July 1900.
