Graneledone yamana
A deep-sea octopus with cartilaginous warts and two eye horns.
Last updated
Graneledone yamana is a deep-water octopus assigned to its genus by lacking an ink sac and crop, having cartilaginous warts on the body cavity, uniserial arm suckers, and a reduced radula.[1] Papillose skin, two horns above the eyes, small gills, and five to seven outer demibranch lamellae are among the identifying features of this species.[1] The southwest Atlantic Ocean, specifically off Uruguay, Argentina, and southern Brazil, is where this species is known to occur.[2]

Key facts and history
Females have 35–80 suckers on the arms, while males have 26–70.[1] Within the southern oceans, Graneledone yamana represents the fifth species discovered in its genus.[2] Deep-water habitats near hydrothermal vents have yielded records of this genus.[2]
What the cited sources add
The 2003 redescription by Allcock, Collins, and Vecchione confirms the genus-level characters of absent ink sac and crop, cartilaginous warts, uniserial suckers, and reduced radula.[1] That same work details the papillose skin, supraocular horns, small gills, and demibranch lamella count as diagnostic.[1] It also provides the arm sucker counts for females and males.[1] The 2000 description by Kommritz establishes the geographic range off Uruguay, Argentina, and southern Brazil.[2]
That paper also notes G. yamana as the fifth southern-ocean Graneledone species.[2]
