Wembley Stadium, in Wembley, London, is England's national football stadium and among the best-known football grounds anywhere. It opened in 2007, replacing the original Wembley that occupied the site from 1923 until 2000. The Football Association owns it through its subsidiary Wembley National Stadium Ltd and keeps its headquarters inside. Holding 90,000 people, it is the biggest stadium in the UK and ranks behind only Camp Nou in Europe. Beyond England internationals and the FA Cup Final, it hosts the Community Shield, EFL finals, play-off finals, rugby league cup finals and NFL London Games.

Background
Rebuilding was meant to start before Christmas 2000 and finish in 2003, but financial and legal problems intervened. Demolition formally began on 30 September 2002. Costs and setbacks mounted: Cleveland Bridge & Engineering Company quit the arch contract, a steel rafter dropped in March 2006 and forced 3,000 workers out, and sewers under the site buckled days later. The 2006 FA Cup final went to Cardiff instead. After the FA and Multiplex settled their dispute, the turf was laid in June 2006 and the finished stadium was handed over on 9 March 2007, with the total project put at £1 billion.
