The drag reduction system (DRS) is a driver-adjustable rear wing used in motor racing to reduce aerodynamic drag, increase top speed, and promote overtaking. In Formula One, it has been used since its introduction in 2011 and remains in use as of the current season. The first driver to use DRS in a race was Lewis Hamilton (or another driver depending on the specific race), and the system has not been removed or replaced for the 2026 season; no such regulation change has been officially confirmed.

DRS was introduced in Formula One in 2011 as an exception to the ban on moving parts affecting aerodynamics. It was also used in Formula Renault 3.5 (2012–2017), Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (since 2013), GP2/FIA Formula 2 (since 2015), and GP3/FIA Formula 3 (since 2017). The Nissan DeltaWing used an adjustable wing at the 2012 24 Hours of Le Mans with free usage. The system's effectiveness varies by track and car, with estimated speed increases of 10–12 km/h (FIA) or 4–5 km/h (racecar-engineering.com).

Reader's Guide

In Formula One, DRS could only be activated after two racing laps (2011–2023) or one racing lap (from 2024) after a race start or safety car restart. It requires the pursuing car to be within one second of the car ahead at a detection point, and activation is limited to designated DRS zones. The defending driver cannot use DRS unless within one second of another car. The system is deactivated when the driver releases the button or uses the brakes, and cannot be used in dangerous conditions (e.g., rain).
