Warrior Kings
Three paths to power in a fantasy medieval world.
Warrior Kings is a real-time strategy game set in a fantasy medieval world. It was developed by Black Cactus and published by Microïds in 2002, with a Mac OS X version released the following year by Feral Interactive. The game explores themes of pagan tribalism, renaissance enlightenment, and imperialist theocracy.
Players can choose from three distinct paths: Pagan, Imperial, and Renaissance. Each path has its own values, warfare style, and storyline.
The story follows Artos, the young son of Baron Amalric of Cravant, a small fiefdom in the Holy Empire—the dominant power on the world of Orbis. The Holy Empire is a theocratic state, blending elements of the Roman Empire, Holy Roman Empire, and Papal States, devoted to a deity called "The One God." It is led by a spiritual ruler, the Patriarch, and a military leader, the Holy Protector. The new Patriarch, Icthyus Granitas, is cruel and corrupt, using the Holy Protector as his enforcer. He accuses dissenters of heresy and treason, forcing them to submit or disappear. Cravant is one such target. In the first level, the Empire invades, kills Artos's father on false charges, and destroys the city. Artos escapes with a small band of loyal soldiers to Angland, a fictionalized England, where he plots revenge.
The Pagan path emphasizes superstition, witchcraft, and nature worship. Its warfare relies on cheap, mass-produced units and indirect damage. A successful Pagan player probes enemy borders and overwhelms them without regard for cost. Signature units include demons and witches with secondary powers and spells. Advanced Pagans can build a Wickerman to summon Abaddon, a powerful AI-controlled demon that causes heavy damage before being destroyed.
The Imperial path uses expensive, well-armored troops and strong fortifications. The Imperial player waits behind thick walls for the enemy to make a critical mistake, then punishes them. Signature units are Priests, Bishops, and Inquisitors, who can pray at churches to activate "Acts of God" against enemies. Later, Imperials can build an Archangel Statue to summon the Sword of God, an Archangel that acts similarly to Abaddon.
The Renaissance path focuses on human ingenuity. It sacrifices some offensive and defensive capability for a strong economy and powerful siegecraft. The Renaissance player studies the enemy and adapts.

Lore & Background
The story follows Artos, son of Baron Amalric of Cravant, a fiefdom within the Holy Empire—a theocratic state blending elements of the Roman Empire, Holy Roman Empire, and Papal States, devoted to 'The One God'. When the corrupt Patriarch Icthyus Granitas accuses Artos's father of treason and razes Cravant, Artos flees to Angland to plot revenge. The player then chooses among three alignments: Pagan (superstition, cheap mass units, demons), Imperial (expensive armored troops, fortifications, priests summoning 'Acts of God'), or Renaissance (gunpowder, siege engines, strong economy).
Reader's Guide
Warrior Kings began development as the title 'Plague' at Eidos plc, first shown at E3 in 1997 as a large-scale full 3D strategy game. After Eidos closed its internal development division in 1999, the team moved to Black Cactus, continuing work under the new title with investment from Eidos. Creative Director Jamie Thomson cited historical events as inspiration, aiming for a logically consistent world. The game was published for Mac OS X by Feral Interactive the year after its initial release. Critic Matt Fox described it as 'ambitious' with 'true 3D environments' but criticized the gameplay and AI interaction. The game emphasizes tactics over troop numbers, with factors like elevation, terrain, and formation affecting combat. A sequel, Warrior Kings: Battles, followed in 2003. Rights reverted to Dave Morris after Black Cactus wound up in January 2005.
