Lion Rampant

The lion, the old-style ball and the word Ready: the club crest since 1959.

Rangers are unusual in having two official crests. The lion rampant club crest, introduced in 1959, shows a lion rampant, an old-style football and the club motto Ready inside a ring carrying the name Rangers Football Club. It is the version used by the media, on merchandise and on official club documents, while the older scroll crest of overlapping RFC letters is the one worn on the strip.

Reader's Guide

The lion rampant crest was modernised in 1968, keeping the lion, the name, the motto and the old-style ball, and was updated again in the early 1990s and in 2020 to the current circular version. It has never featured prominently on the shirt: the scroll crest, believed to date from the club's formation in 1872 and first seen on surviving memorabilia from 1881-82, returned to the chest of the shirt in 1968 and to the shorts from 1978-79.

Five stars were added above the scroll crest after the 2003 treble and 50th title, one for every ten championships, and a 150th anniversary crest was worn during 2021-22. The motto Ready is a shortened form of Aye Ready, Scots for Always Ready.
