Gordon Durie

Gordon Scott Durie, born 6 December 1965, is a Scottish former professional footballer and coach. Primarily a striker but able to play in several positions, he featured for East Fife, Hibernian, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Rangers, and Hearts, and earned 43 caps for Scotland. After retiring as a player in 2001, he moved into coaching and management in 2010, working as an assistant at East Fife and later with Rangers.

Durie began his senior career at East Fife before joining Hibernian in 1984. Still a teenager, he was on the losing side in the 1985 Scottish League Cup final. Hibs sold him to Chelsea for £400,000 in 1986. Over his spell at Chelsea from 1986 to 1991, he scored 63 goals in 153 appearances, and the club won the Football League Second Division in 1989. In 1991, he moved to Tottenham Hotspur for £2.2 million, scoring on his debut in a 3–2 away win at Southampton. He also became Spurs’ first Premier League goalscorer, netting in a 2–2 home draw with Crystal Palace on 22 August 1992.

Durie joined his boyhood favourites Rangers in November 1993. He played a key part in winning the last four of their ‘nine in a row’ Scottish league championships and featured in a handful of matches during two later title wins. He scored a hat-trick in the 1996 Scottish Cup final as Rangers beat Hearts 5–1, and collected runners-up medals in the same competition in 1994 and 1998. He also won the Scottish League Cup in 1998. After 179 appearances and 52 goals for Rangers, he left at the end of the 1999–2000 season. Turning down an offer from Australia, he signed for Hearts in September 2000 and played there until retiring at the end of the 2000–01 season.

Internationally, Durie made his Scotland debut on 11 November 1987 in a 1–0 win over Bulgaria. He earned 43 caps in total, scoring seven goals. He was one of Scotland’s brighter performers at Euro ’96, and scored the second goal in a 2–0 win over Latvia that secured qualification for the 1998 FIFA World Cup. His final appearance for Scotland came during that World Cup, in a 3–0 defeat to Morocco.

In coaching, Durie became assistant manager of East Fife in November 2010. He was appointed caretaker manager on 1 March 2012 after John Robertson left, then took the job on a longer-term basis before stepping down in November 2012 due to ill health. He joined Rangers’ coaching staff in July 2013 to work with reserve and under-20 teams, and was promoted to a first-team coaching role in December 2014 following Ally McCoist’s departure. He left Rangers in July 2015 when new manager Mark Warburton reshaped the coaching staff.

His son, Scott, was a youth player at Rangers and signed for East Fife in 2010. Durie was declared bankrupt in 2016 after a failed investment in a film production company.
