Reader's Guide
The crowd was possible because Ibrox was then a vast bowl of earthen terracing built after the 1902 disaster, with a single Main Stand opened in 1929. The ground held crowds above 100,000 through the 1950s and 1960s, but after the 1971 disaster on Stairway 13 the terracing was replaced by three all-seated stands by 1981, and after the 1997 renovation the all-seated capacity is 51,700. Rangers supporters also hold the record crowd for a friendly, 104,679 at Hampden Park against Eintracht Frankfurt in 1961.
