History
After the Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) folded in 2003 following three seasons, efforts to relaunch a professional women's league eventually led to the creation of Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) in 2006. The new league originally planned to begin in 2008 with teams from Chicago, St. Louis, Dallas, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and an undetermined Western city, but its launch was pushed back to 2009, with Boston and the New York/New Jersey area also added.
Sky Blue FC was founded in 2006 as Jersey Sky Blue and played in the semi-professional USL W-League in 2007. Co-founders included future New Jersey governor Phil Murphy and his wife Tammy Murphy, along with Steven H. Temares, Francesco Prandoni, and Thomas Hofstetter; the Murphys later stated their motivation was to show their daughter a viable pathway for women to play professional soccer in the United States. In September 2007, the club was selected for the New York/New Jersey slot in WPS and rebranded as Sky Blue FC, while the Jersey Sky Blue name continued for a feeder team in the W-League, later renamed the Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues.
Thomas Hofstetter served as Sky Blue FC president until 2013 and chaired the feeder team until its folding in 2010. By 2018, Phil Murphy was a majority shareholder. Ian Sawyers was named the first head coach and general manager on March 5, 2008, and the team was officially unveiled as Sky Blue FC on September 9, 2008. A week later, the U.S. women's national team allocated Heather O'Reilly, Natasha Kai, and Christie Pearce to the club.
Colors and crest
During its time in Women's Professional Soccer, Sky Blue FC wore orange at home and sky blue away. When the NWSL launched in 2013, the home colors became midnight blue with white away shirts and midnight blue shorts. In 2015, the club returned to sky blue and orange, with sky blue home jerseys and orange away jerseys, but the following season home colors reverted to midnight blue and away to sky blue. This pattern continued: home jerseys were sky blue in 2017 and 2018, midnight blue in 2019, and black with sky blue accents in 2020.
Throughout the Sky Blue FC era, the crest remained a blue, white, and orange shield with the club's name, and a blue star above the shield was added to represent the 2009 WPS championship. After the rebrand to NJ/NY Gotham FC, a new crest designed by Matthew Wolff featured a shield adorned with the Statue of Liberty's crown, symbolizing the club's international ambitions. The lettering includes a hybrid Y and J reflecting the club's name, location, and fanbase.
The kit's blue sash represents the Hudson River and the slash in NJ/NY, while also harkening back to the team's Sky Blue roots. The official colors became Sky Blue, Gotham Black, and Cloud White, representing the original name, current name, and supporters group name.
Training facility
Since its founding, Gotham FC has operated without a dedicated training facility, renting or sharing fields in New Jersey, including those of youth programs and the New York Red Bulls Academy. On June 10, 2026, the club announced plans to build its first permanent training facility by renovating the former New York Red Bulls training site in Whippany. The $35 million project is privately funded under a 15-year lease starting September 1, 2026, with construction designed by SHoP Architects scheduled to begin in late summer 2026 and completion estimated in 2027. Plans include three grass pitches (one heated), a fourth full-size indoor field subject to permit approval, a 3,000-square-foot gym, recovery and hydrotherapy rooms, a player lounge, dining space, a press room, and a content studio.
Broadcasting
For American viewers, Sky Blue FC matches were available exclusively on Go90 starting in April 2017, while international fans could watch via the NWSL website. That season, the team was featured in four nationally televised Lifetime NWSL Game of the Week broadcasts: May 13, May 20, July 1, and August 12. Earlier seasons had been streamed worldwide on YouTube, with Corey Cohen handling play-by-play, Dan Lauletta providing color commentary, Evan Davis hosting halftime, and NJ Discover managing production. On March 11, 2020, the NWSL announced a three-year media deal with CBS Sports and Twitch. Since 2023, the team’s matches have also been broadcast locally on MSG Network.
