History
USL Division III was created in April 2017, and league officials then scouted potential markets. Steven Short, the league's vice president, toured Greenville in July 2017 and described it as a top contender. The league started revealing its inaugural 2019 teams in January 2018. Greenville's club was officially unveiled on March 13, 2018, with local business owner Joe Erwin as the lead investor.
It became the third franchise to join, following Tormenta FC and FC Tucson, both of which had been competing in the Premier Development League. The team made the playoffs during its debut season. The name Greenville Triumph SC, along with its crest and colors, came out on August 9, 2018. Two weeks later, on August 27, the club named former U.S. men's national team player John Harkes as head coach on a three-year deal.
On June 8, 2021, the organization announced it would launch a women's team in the USL W League starting in 2022. On January 28, 2022, club officials revealed plans for an 8,100-seat, multi-sport stadium on a six-acre site in Mauldin at BridgeWay Station, but the Greenville County Council finance committee rejected that proposal. On October 30, 2024, after a two-year pause, the team announced an expanded 10,000-seat stadium at the same location, which will host both the Triumph and the Greenville Liberty.
Completion is expected in 2026, with an estimated cost between $80 million and $100 million. On September 23, 2025, the team posted an update stating the stadium would host its first matches in 2026, with a revised capacity of up to 6,300 people, and that funding would come from the city of Mauldin, the state of South Carolina, and Greenville Pro Soccer, along with donated land and in-kind contributions from Hughes Investments. The design will mirror BridgeWay Station's European-inspired architecture.
On June 3, 2026, the club played its first game at the new stadium, GE Vernova Park, defeating Forward Madison 1-0 in front of a sold-out 4,300 capacity crowd.
Club culture
The Greenville Triumph's supporters group, the Reedy River Riot, began forming when its leadership discussed strategies to bring professional soccer to Greenville. A social media campaign using #usl2gvl and a Change.org petition in June 2017 gathered over 900 signatures, drawing attention from USL leadership and local ownership. The group's leadership consists of soccer fanatics from the Greenville area who have previously served in supporter group leadership. The group waves flags and says chants.
