History
The United Soccer League granted North Sixth Group a USL League One expansion team in Brooklyn on June 8, 2023, with play to start in 2025 and a women's and youth team to follow. USMNT international Timothy Weah joined the ownership group on May 28, 2024. The club announced it would field a women's team in the USL Super League, a Division One league that began in August 2024. Though late 2023 reports placed the women's team in 2025, the USL announced on February 9, 2024, that Brooklyn FC's women's side would be one of the Super League's inaugural eight teams.
The league released its schedule on May 30, 2024, setting the club's inaugural match for August 31, 2024, at home against Carolina Ascent FC. On May 17, 2024, Brooklyn FC signed Puerto Rican national team goalkeeper Sydney Martinez as the first player in club history. Due to unspecified issues with the playing surface at Maimonides Park, the inaugural match was postponed; the first home match was rescheduled to September 25, 2024, against Dallas Trinity FC.
Colors and badge
The Brooklyn FC badge and name were revealed on November 9, 2023, created by British designer Christopher Payne. The logo’s limestone hue nods to the Brooklyn Bridge, which appears in the design, while the brown shade evokes the borough’s brownstone architecture. This crest is used across all club teams. A planned Kappa kit deal was later shifted to Diaza after the ownership group bought a stake in that manufacturer.
Academy
In late 2023, Brooklyn FC named Two Bridges Football Club, a local youth organization, as its official academy, set to compete in the USL Academy League starting in 2024. Maximilian Mansfield, Two Bridges' executive director, became Brooklyn FC's president and CEO, though he had left both roles by October 2024. The academy's U23 team, called Brooklyn FC II, joined the semi-professional UPSL in 2024. Additionally, the club's U20 side scheduled an exhibition match against Ecuador's C.D. Cuenca for July 13, 2024, announced on June 12.
Stadium
On January 19, 2024, it was reported that Brooklyn FC planned to play at Maimonides Park in the Coney Island neighborhood of Brooklyn; the league confirmed a multi-year deal on January 31. Maimonides Park is a 7,000-seat stadium on the Coney Island Boardwalk, previously home to the second New York Cosmos in 2017. Brooklyn FC intends to use a different field orientation than the Cosmos, leaving the pitcher's mound intact. Before the women's opener in 2024, issues with soccer turf installation forced the club to move its first seven home matches to Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium at Columbia University.
