History

The team's name was announced as the Beat on June 18, 2009, chosen from a fan poll that included Attack, Beat, and Storm. The new Beat logo reused the design of the previous WUSA logo, replacing the two shades of blue with Gold and Ferrari Red. Atlanta began building its roster at the 2009 WPS Expansion Draft on September 15, 2009, selecting six players from the existing seven WPS teams, including four from the league's top two finishers. A week later, the club selected five international players in the 2009 WPS International Draft, three of whom came from Umea IK. The Beat ended the 2010 season in last place with 5 wins, 13 losses, and 6 ties. The 2011 season opened on April 9 against the Boston Breakers before slightly over 4,000 spectators at KLS Stadium; Atlanta lost 1–4, with Carli Lloyd scoring on a penalty kick in the 78th minute.
