Lemoore Cubs

1911 minor league team in Lemoore, California.

Last updated

The Lemoore Cubs were a minor league baseball team from Lemoore, California, that played only a partial season in 1911. They competed in the Class D San Joaquin Valley League, a six-team circuit that also included the Coalinga Tigers, Hanford Braves, Porterville Orange Pickers, Tulare Merchants, and Visalia Colts. The team’s nickname, “Cubs,” came from its practice of signing many young players to the roster. On March 4, 1911, Oscar Jones was announced as the team’s manager, and he expressed optimism about a lively season in the valley.

On opening day in Porterville, the home team beat Lemoore 3–2, with Porterville pitcher Bill Thelle striking out 14 batters. The league had expanded from four to six teams for its second season, which began on April 16, 1911, but it folded permanently during the season. The Lemoore Cubs were in third place when the league disbanded on July 18, 1911, after the Tulare and Porterville franchises had already folded on July 11. Lemoore finished with a record of 7–6 under manager Oscar Jones, placing 2.0 games behind first-place Tulare Merchants (9–4).

Jones led the league with 7 wins. The final standings also included Coalinga (8–6), Hanford (6–7), Visalia (5–8), and Porterville (5–8).

Lemoore has not hosted another minor league team since. The name of the Cubs’ home ballpark is unknown. Notable alumni include player-manager Oscar Jones.
