Bakersfield Drillers
1910 San Joaquin Valley League champions.
Last updated
Back in 1910, the Bakersfield Drillers took the field as a Class D minor league team in the San Joaquin Valley League. They captured the league championship that year during a shortened season, which turned out to be the league's only season.
History
The Bakersfield Drillers were a charter member of the four-team Class D San Joaquin Valley League when minor league baseball first came to Bakersfield in 1910. The league also included the Coalinga Savages, Tulare Merchants, and Visalia Pirates. Manager Brick Devereaux led the Drillers to a 21-9 record, putting them 7.5 games ahead of second-place Visalia when the league folded on September 12, 1910.
Tulare had already disbanded on August 8, and Coalinga followed on August 18. Bakersfield pitcher Willard Meikle led the league with 11 wins, 101 strikeouts, and an 11-4 record. The team’s name honored the local oil industry, which began with the Kern River Oil Field in 1899, still active today.
