Hayward Cubs

Minor league team in Hayward, 1910–1911.

Last updated

The Hayward Cubs were a minor league baseball team from Hayward, California, that played in the Class D Central California League during the 1910 and 1911 seasons. The 1910 squad only played part of the season in Hayward; it began when the San Rafael team relocated there on June 12, 1910, then moved again to Fruitvale on July 10, where it disbanded on October 9. That combined San Rafael/Hayward/Fruitvale team finished in sixth place with a 7–17 record, 9.0 games behind the Richmond Merchants, under managers George Englefield, William Hull, and C.W. Heyer.

The 1911 team, called the Cubs, started the season in Hayward and placed seventh in a shortened season that ended when the league folded on July 9, 1911. The Cubs finished 5.0 games behind the San Leandro Cherry Pickers with a 4–9 record, managed by Len Schroeder. Both Hayward teams played their home games at the Boosters' Club Baseball Grounds, located at Myrtle Street and Filbert Street. The Central California League never reformed, and Hayward has not hosted another minor league team.

History

The 1910 Hayward team entered the Class D Central California League mid-season when the San Rafael franchise relocated to Hayward on June 12, 1910. The league was highly unstable that year: seven of the eight charter teams moved during the season, three moved two or more times, and three disbanded. Fifteen different sites were used, with two cities hosting two different teams. Hayward itself moved on July 10 to replace the Fruitvale team, which had relocated to become the Alameda Alerts.

The combined San Rafael/Hayward/Fruitvale club finished sixth with a 7–17 record, 9.0 games behind the Richmond Merchants, managed by George Englefield, William Hull, and C.W. Heyer. In 1911, the Hayward Cubs began the season and finished seventh in a shortened campaign.

The Central California League started on April 9, 1911, and permanently folded on July 9, 1911. The Cubs ended with a 4–9 record, 5.0 games behind the San Leandro Cherry Pickers, playing under manager Len Schroeder. The league never reformed, and Hayward has not hosted another minor league team.
