Lore & Background
Lance serves as the final member of the Elite Four in Pokémon Gold and Silver. To become the new Champion, the player must defeat him after overcoming the other three members. His team is composed of Dragon-type Pokémon, including a powerful Dragonite. After the player defeats Lance and the Elite Four, they become the new Champion. Later, the player can travel to the Kanto Region and challenge the Kanto Gym Leaders. After defeating all eight Kanto Gym Leaders, the player is allowed to enter Mt. Silver. Deep within Mt. Silver's caves is Red, the main protagonist of Red, Green, Blue and Yellow and Indigo League Champion, whom the player can challenge for the most difficult final battle in the game. Lance is not mentioned in connection with Blackthorn City, Clair, or any mentorship role in the source.
In Their Own Story
The player's journey culminates in a battle against Lance, the Pokémon Master and final member of the Elite Four, on Indigo Plateau. Defeating Lance and the rest of the Elite Four earns the player the title of Champion. The player can then travel to the Kanto Region and challenge the Kanto Gym Leaders. After defeating them, the player can enter Mt. Silver and challenge Red, the protagonist of the previous games, for the most difficult final battle in the game. Lance does not appear in Mt. Silver or in any other story role beyond being the Johto League Champion.
Reader's Guide
To defeat Lance, a trainer must be prepared for a team of Dragon-type Pokémon. His signature Pokémon is Dragonite, a powerful Dragon/Flying-type. Ice-type moves are particularly effective against his team. The player must first defeat the other three members of the Elite Four before facing Lance. After becoming Champion, the player can explore Kanto and challenge its Gym Leaders. The ultimate post-game challenge is defeating Red in Mt. Silver. Lance is not described as a mentor or as having any role beyond being the Champion in the source.
