Gameplay

Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax is a two-dimensional fighting game where two players fight using a playable fighter and an assist character. Three main attack buttons (weak, medium, strong) are used, along with a support button to summon the assist character; the support gauge must rebuild after each summon. Building the Climax Gauge allows powerful Impact Skill attacks, and Blast Icons enable Blast Attacks to escape combos. The home version includes an original story campaign called Dream Duel Story, online multiplayer, and cross-save between PS3 and Vita. Unlockable samples from the represented light novel series are also included. The Ignition update adds a second assist slot for Blast only and introduces the Ignition system, which gives one character per team a power-up after each round; reusing the same Ignition from the previous round grants an Extra Ignition.

Character roster

The initial roster has 12 playable characters and 18 assist characters from 22 light novels; the current roster is 19 playable and 30 assist characters. All characters are voiced by their respective anime actors, with a few exceptions. A non-playable character named Denshin (voiced by Mao), based on the Dreamcast character from Sega Hard Girls, summons playable characters to combat a malevolent entity from Zetsumu. Boss characters include a form of Akira Yuki from Virtua Fighter, with Pai Chan as his assist; both later became playable in console ports and post-1.20 arcade versions. Eight additional characters (four playable, four assists) were added by mid-2014. Second Sega guests Selvaria Bles and Alicia Melchiott from Valkyria Chronicles appeared in console ports and arcade version 1.30. Stages and music are based on Sega titles such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Nights into Dreams..., Shinobi, Border Break, Valkyria Chronicles, 7th Dragon, and Phantasy Star Online 2. DLC characters from Sword Art Online (Yuuki as playable, Llenn as assist) released December 25, 2015. DLC from And you thought there is never a girl online? (Ako as playable, Rusian as assist) was included in a future update.

Reception

Hardcore Gamer awarded it 4 out of 5, calling it a love-letter to anime and Sega fans. PlayStation Lifestyle gave it 5.5 out of 10, stating that while solid as a fighting game, the emphasis is not on gameplay and can leave newcomers disconnected. Destructoid noted it may be too simplistic for hardcore fighting game fans and too complex for those intimidated by the genre. The PS3 version sold 34,671 copies in its first week in Japan (sixth on the sales chart), and the Vita version sold 25,607 copies (ninth on the chart).
