The Amazing Spider-Man: Lethal Foes

A 1995 Japanese-exclusive Spider-Man platformer for Super Famicom.

The Amazing Spider-Man: Lethal Foes

The Amazing Spider-Man: Lethal Foes is a platform video game released for the Super Famicom in 1995, featuring the Marvel Comics hero Spider-Man. It was only available in Japan. The title seems to draw from the 1993 limited comic series *The Lethal Foes of Spider-Man*, but the story shares little with that comic aside from featuring a roster of Spider-Man's enemies.

In the game, Spider-Man uses his web-swinging to navigate levels, each of which includes a timed checkpoint that the player must reach before a countdown expires. Enemies faced include Spider-Slayers, Beetle, Lizard, Mysterio, Alistair Smythe, Green Goblin, Scorpion, Venom, Doctor Octopus, and Carnage. Friendly characters such as Human Torch, Speedball, and Iron Fist appear in cutscenes between stages. Additional content could be unlocked by scanning barcodes with a Barcode Battler II device connected through a "Barcode Battler II Interface."

The plot begins with Doctor Octopus escaping prison and forcing Curt Connors to help him. Connors uses the Lizard serum on himself, turning into the Lizard—a mindless beast under Octopus's control. Octopus hires scientist Spencer Smythe to create Spider-Slayers. Spider-Man tries to stop Beetle from robbing a bank but is attacked by the Spider-Slayers; he defeats them, but Beetle escapes and later joins Octopus. Meanwhile, astronaut John Jameson is attacked by a red and black goo on his spaceship. Spider-Man defeats Beetle and later subdues Lizard with an antidote, freeing him from Octopus's control. Mysterio, learning of Octopus's plans, traps Spider-Man but is defeated; Spider-Man finds a GPS tracker on Mysterio that leads to Octopus's arms. Octopus, realizing he is being tracked, upgrades to Mark II arms with more tentacles and forcibly transforms Alistair Smythe into a human-Spider-Slayer hybrid. Spider-Man follows the GPS to Octopus's old arms, where Smythe ambushes him. Octopus then sends Green Goblin after Spider-Man, who chases him across the city. Venom ambushes the Goblin Glider, but Spider-Man intervenes. Venom and Eddie Brock are both present, and Venom later helps Spider-Man, but the symbiote does not leave Brock. Doctor Octopus attacks, but his prototype arms begin to explode, and Spider-Man appears victorious. Suddenly, a portal tied to Carnage's origin opens in the sky.
