Sonic Adventure 2
Two campaigns, three gameplay styles, and Chao raising.
Last updated
Sonic Adventure 2 is a 3D platform game divided into two campaigns: Hero and Dark.[1] Players fight to save the world by controlling Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles in the Hero campaign, while those in the Dark campaign control Shadow, Doctor Eggman, and Rouge to conquer it.[1]
Making and release
Sonic Adventure 2 was developed by Sonic Team USA, a downsized team of 11 staff members led by director Takashi Iizuka.[2][3] Shiro Maekawa conceived and wrote the story, wanting a substantial portion to take place in space.[4][5] Sega discontinued the Dreamcast on January 31, 2001, making Adventure 2 one of the last major Dreamcast exclusives.[6] A GameCube port, subtitled Battle, was released in Japan on December 20, 2001.[7]
Shadow was originally conceived as a villain, but Iizuka later chose to make him an antihero to better resonate with American audiences.[8] At E3 in May 2000, Sega revealed Sonic Adventure 2 by showing a trailer in a private screening and issuing a press release.[9] North America received the game on June 19, 2001, while the rest of the world got it on June 23.[10]
What the cited sources add
Shea's article notes that the team of 120 was pared down to 11 and sent to America to make the game.[3] Shea states that Sonic Team overcame the hurdles to deliver a critically acclaimed release.[3] Liu wrote that levels have sharp, photographic textures and everything runs at a silky 60 FPS.[11] Troper noted that rapper Hunnid-P claims to have received no royalties for his work on Knuckles' level music.[12]
Liu from GameRevolution commended the game's replayability, citing the variety of play styles and the existence of 180 distinct objectives.[11][13] Troper of Vice noted that the soundtrack includes vocalists from bands such as Danger Danger and Rough Cutt.[12]
