Lore & Background
Sonic Team began in 1990 with programmer Yuji Naka, artist Naoto Ohshima, and level designer Hirokazu Yasuhara. Their first game, Sonic the Hedgehog (1991), was a major success that boosted sales of the Sega Genesis. After the initial release, Naka and Yasuhara moved to America to work at Sega Technical Institute, while Ohshima developed Sonic CD in Japan. Naka returned to Japan in 1994 to lead CS3, later renamed R&D No. 8, which adopted the Sonic Team brand and produced non-Sonic games such as Nights into Dreams (1996) and Burning Rangers (1998).
Following Sonic Adventure (1998), some staff moved to the United States to form Sonic Team USA, which developed Sonic Adventure 2 (2001). In 2000, R&D No. 8 became SONICTEAM Ltd., with Naka as CEO. After Sega's financial troubles, United Game Artists was absorbed into Sonic Team in 2003, and Sonic Team USA became Sega Studios USA in 2004. Following Sammy Corporation's purchase of Sega in 2004, Sonic Team was reincorporated as Sega's GE1 research and development department. Naka left during development of Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), and Sega Studios USA merged back into Sonic Team in 2008.
Reader's Guide
Sonic Team's significance lies in its creation of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, which became Sega's flagship series and a key competitor to Nintendo's Mario during the 16-bit console wars. The original Sonic games and Nights into Dreams are considered among the best ever made. The studio's work on the Dreamcast, particularly Sonic Adventure and Phantasy Star Online, demonstrated early online gaming capabilities. However, after Sega exited the hardware business and became a third-party developer, Sonic Team faced challenges. Games released in the decade after 2006 received poorer reviews, and studio head Takashi Iizuka acknowledged that the team had prioritized shipping over quality. The studio's legacy includes pioneering fast-paced platforming, innovative 3D transitions, and a lasting cultural impact through its mascot character.
