A Boy and His Blob
A re-imagined puzzle-platformer about friendship and cooperation.
Last updated
It is a re-imagining of the 1989 NES game A Boy and His Blob: Trouble on Blobolonia.[1] The game was released for the Wii in North America on October 13 and in Europe on November 6, 2009.[1] Majesco published the puzzle-platform game A Boy and His Blob, which was created by WayForward.[1]
Making and release
Majesco acquired the rights to the series after Absolute Entertainment went bankrupt in 1995.[2] WayForward pitched the "idea of a very heartwarming Boy and Blob, and having a very friendly game".[2] The game's distinctive visual style was largely the work of art director Marc Gomez.[3] Gomez aimed for a very soft aesthetic, drawing inspiration from the films of Hayao Miyazaki.[3]
Marc also made the choice to depict the boy as "much younger and rounder" compared to his NES version.[3] WayForward and Ziggurat Interactive put out a Nintendo Switch version on November 4, 2021.[1]
What the cited sources add
Sean Velasco wanted controls "very intuitive for the family crowd" and to "avoid anything that doesn't directly serve the game itself".[4] Approximately 4,000 distinct animation frames are present in the game.[5] Because testers found it too troublesome to manage the blob's emotions and keep it content throughout the game, most of those mechanics were removed.[6]
