James Lind (4 October 1716 – 13 July 1794) was a Scottish physician who helped transform hygiene practices in the Royal Navy. He also served in the Mediterranean, off West Africa, and in the West Indies. While at sea, Lind kept detailed medical records and observations on disease and shipboard hygiene, and reported back to England about poor hospital facilities for sick sailors in Mahón. By 1747, he was ship surgeon on HMS Salisbury in the Channel Fleet. While that ship patrolled the Bay of Biscay, he conducted his famous scurvy experiment starting on 20 May 1747. He divided twelve patients into groups and gave each group different dietary supplements—citrus fruits, herbs, pastes, cider vinegar, and other treatments. After leaving the Navy, Lind wrote his MD thesis on venereal diseases, titled *De morbis venereis localibus*, and earned his degree from the University of Edinburgh Medical School. He then obtained a licence from the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh to practise in the city. While working in private practice, he gathered extensive research on scurvy and published his first treatise on the disease in 1753 with Edinburgh publishers Kincaid and Donaldson, dedicating it to Lord Anson. In the summer of 1758, he was appointed chief physician of the Royal Naval Hospital Haslar in Gosport. The hospital had opened just over four years earlier as the Royal Navy’s primary medical facility, and Lind was its second chief physician. Lord Anson is believed to have sponsored him for the post, which paid £200 a year. The role was largely administrative: Lind oversaw an average of 1,500 patients daily and reported directly to the Admiralty’s Sick and Hurt Board.
