Valuev was born on 21 August 1973 in Leningrad. His parents are short, unlike his Tatar ancestor 'of mountainous proportions'. He initially denied that his size was due to medical issues such as gigantism complicated by acromegaly, but in 2009 he was diagnosed with acromegaly and has since stated that he has it. Valuev is a Russian Orthodox Christian. He wrote a book in Russian called My 12 Rounds with the help of sports journalist Konstantin Osipov, for which he received a literary prize from the Union of Writers of St. Petersburg. In January 2006, he was accused of assaulting a security guard at the Spartak Ice Palace in Saint Petersburg, and a criminal investigation was launched but later dropped.

Valuev's professional career included winning the WBA heavyweight title from John Ruiz in 2005, losing it to Ruslan Chagaev in 2007, and regaining it against Ruiz in 2008. He announced his retirement four days after his loss to David Haye in 2009.
