Antônio Silva (born 14 September 1979) is a Brazilian former professional mixed martial artist and kickboxer who fought in the Heavyweight division. Over his career, he appeared in promotions such as the UFC, Strikeforce, EliteXC, Cage Rage, Fight Nights Global, World Victory Road, K-1 HERO’S, and Cage Warriors. He held the EliteXC Heavyweight Championship, the Cage Rage World Heavyweight Championship, and the Cage Warriors Super Heavyweight Championship.
Silva was born in Brasília, Distrito Federal. He started training in karate at age four and earned his black belt at 12. After fourteen years of karate, he moved into Brazilian jiu-jitsu and judo at 17.
In 2005, Silva began his career with the UK-based Wolfslair MMA Academy. After a 2006 fight against Tadas Rimkevicius, Wolfslair asked Silva’s instructor, Mario Neto, to have Silva leave the team and return to Brazil. The gym claimed Silva owed it over £20,000; Silva said it owed him £6,000 in purses for two fights he was promised £3,000 each. During the dispute, he trained with Brazilian Top Team before joining American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Florida. For his Strikeforce World Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament quarterfinal against Fedor Emelianenko, he also trained at Imperial Athletics in Boca Raton, Florida.
Silva made his professional debut in the UK against Georgian fighter Tengiz Tedoradze, winning by TKO in 47 seconds. In his next bout, a Cage Warriors debut, he won by strikes after his opponent submitted. He then debuted in Cage Rage, becoming the Cage Rage World Heavyweight Champion with a TKO win. Returning to Cage Warriors, he defeated Ruben “Warpath” Villareal by TKO for the Cage Warriors Super Heavyweight Championship. He followed with a knockout of Lithuanian fighter Tadas Rimkevicius, then made his Japanese debut for K-1 Hero’s, defeating Tom Erikson by TKO and winning his next fight by knockout. This gave him an undefeated 7–0 record, all first-round TKO/KO wins. In his only BodogFIGHT bout, he lost to Eric Pele by controversial TKO.
On 10 February 2007, Silva debuted in EliteXC at EliteXC: Destiny, beating UFC veteran Wesley Correira by first-round TKO. He was scheduled to fight Jonathan Wiezorek on the Dynamite!! USA card, but the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) found a benign pituitary gland tumor in his pre-fight medicals and refused to license him.
