Early life and family

Ed Gamble grew up in Wandsworth and Raynes Park in southwest London. His parents split when he was four; his mother, an NHS nurse and health visitor, raised him, while his father worked as a solicitor. He has two younger half-siblings on his father’s side. He went to Highfield School and Nursery in Wandsworth, then King’s College School, a private boys’ day school in Wimbledon. There, he used humor to deflect bullying, figuring he could make jokes about his weight faster and better than anyone else. He studied philosophy at Durham University, where he met comedians Nish Kumar, Nick Mohammed, and Tom Neenan. Before becoming a full-time comedian, he did manual labor, data entry, and worked at the Raynes Park Tavern, a pub he called surprisingly dangerous for the area, recalling arriving to find an ambulance outside and once stepping over a pool of blood at the door.

Career

Gamble's early work included co-presenting two series of The Peacock and Gamble Podcast with Ray Peacock, totalling over 100 episodes. He performed a 15-minute set on the extended version of Russell Howard's Good News on BBC Three in late 2010. He performed with Peacock at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2011, 2012 and 2013, and supported Greg Davies on his Firing Cheeseballs at a Dog Tour in 2011. He also recorded radio shows with Peacock on FUBAR Radio.

Gamble debuted solo at Edinburgh Fringe in 2014 with Gambletron 5000, followed by Lawman in 2015 and Stampede in 2016. His stand-up often includes observational comedy about himself, including his Type 1 diabetes, which he made the central topic of his 2018 Edinburgh Fringe show Blizzard and his Amazon Prime Video special Blood Sugar. He became a regular panellist on Mock the Week from July 2015. That year he appeared with Amy Hoggart in Almost Royal, a faux-reality show on BBC America.

He guest-hosted the Elis James and John Robins Show on Radio X in 2017 and 2018. Since 2018 he has co-presented the podcast Off Menu with Ed Gamble and James Acaster, and from 2019 until 2026 he hosted a weekly Radio X show with Matthew Crosby. Gamble won the ninth series of Taskmaster in 2019, and in 2022 he participated in the second Champions of Champions special, finishing last. In October 2020 he began presenting Taskmaster The Podcast.

In 2023 he hosted a non-broadcast pilot of Foodmaster, a food-themed Taskmaster spin-off. He narrated adverts for Cazoo in 2020, was a guest judge on Great British Menu in 2020, and became a judge for Series 17, 18 and 19 in February 2022. In May 2022 he was announced as one of six rotating co-hosts joining Alexander Armstrong on Pointless.
