Zhao Mengfu (1254–1322) was a Chinese calligrapher, painter, and scholar during the Yuan dynasty.[1] Through Emperor Xiaozong's brother Zhao Bogui, who wed a granddaughter of Emperor Huizong, Zhao Mengfu was linked to the Song imperial line.[1]
Life and work
He was not awarded an important position in office at that time.[2] One of his most celebrated landscape paintings is “The Mind Landscape of Xie Youyu” at the Princeton University Art Museum.[3] In 2019 Dutch scholar Lennert Gesterkamp argued that the painting's colophon mentioning Xie Youyu is a forgery.[3] Gesterkamp argued Zhao's intention was to honor his own spiritual master, Daoist scholar Du Daojian.[3]
In 1286, following a recommendation from the Censor-in-chief, Zhao Mengfu went to the Yuan capital Dadu to meet Kublai Khan, though he did not receive a high-ranking post.[2] Guan Daosheng and Zhao Mengfu were parents to multiple sons.[4]
What the cited sources add
The same source confirms Zhao had several sons with Guan Daosheng and that Zhao Yong became a famous painter.[4][5] That source also notes Zhao was a member of the Academy of Worthies and that his work was later appreciated by Emperor Renzong.[2][6]
