A minor planet, 3586 Vasnetsov, was named after him and his brother Apollinary in 1978.[1] Specializing in mythological and historical themes, Viktor Vasnetsov worked as both a painter and a draughtsman.[2]

Life and work

Viktor Vasnetsov was born in 1848 in the remote village of Lopyal in Vyatka Governorate, the second of seven children.[3] He recalled living with peasant children and liking them as a friend, not as a narodnik.[4] After seminary, he moved to Saint Petersburg to study art, auctioning paintings to fund the trip.[5] He failed to enter the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1867 but succeeded one year later.[6]

In 1915 he helped design a military uniform for a victory parade, credited with creating the budenovka hat.[5] Viktor's earliest paintings, created in Lopyal, were primarily landscapes and depictions of village life.[7]
