In Their Own Story

The heat hits before the light does. Adam feels it on the back of his neck, a dry, sucking pull that draws the moisture from his eyes. Then the black glass cracks under his boots and the whole floor exhales—a long, sulfurous breath that rolls across the basalt plateau in a wave of orange.

He checks the hammer. The chainsaw is warm already, idling at a low growl. Above him, the sky is not a sky; it is a ceiling of slow-churning magma, and somewhere in that glow, shapes are forming. Too many legs. Too many mouths.

A voice—not a voice, a pressure behind his teeth—tells him the binding is active. The hells have called a round, and he is the answer they expect. He steps off the ledge into the dark below, and the fire parts around him like water around a stone, and the screaming starts.
