Lore & Background
Sein is in fact the core that sat on top of the Spirit Tree. When Ori was lost as a newborn, the Spirit Tree released a flash of light to look for it, and the light burned and killed the recently hatched young of the owl Kuro while she was away from her nest. To keep this from happening to her one unborn child, Kuro took the core away. Without Sein, the Spirit Tree could not sustain the three elements that hold Nibel in balance, Waters, Winds and Warmth, and the forest withered.
Reader's Guide
Players control Ori and Sein together: Ori jumps, climbs and solves puzzles, while Sein shoots Spirit Flames at enemies and obstacles. Ability points can be spent on upgrades such as more damage for the Spirit Flame. Ori and Sein were later added together as a playable fighter in the independent fighting game Rivals of Aether. In the sequel, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Ori no longer travels with Sein; because the first game ended with Sein returned to the Spirit Tree, Moon Studios built new melee-focused combat for Ori.
Sein sets Ori the task of recovering the light of the three elements. On the way the pair meet Gumo, the last of the Gumon clan, and are harried by Kuro. After rekindling the Wind element they find Kuro's nest, holding a single egg, and learn why she took the core. Once Warmth is restored in the volcano Mount Horu, Kuro attacks again; Naru arrives to protect Ori, and Kuro, remembering the loss of her children, carries Sein back to the Spirit Tree. The tree's flash of light puts out the spreading fire and restores the forest, but destroys Kuro.
