A grieving mother whose wrath reshaped the forest of Nibel.
Kuro is a giant, shadowy owl who inhabits the forest of Nibel and is initially hostile toward Ori. Lore & Background
Kuro's tragedy began when the Spirit Tree released a flash of light to locate the lost Ori. That light burned and destroyed every one of Kuro's eggs while she was returning from hunting with prey. Only a single egg remained. Determined to prevent this from happening to her yet unborn child, Kuro stole Sein while it was still attached to the Spirit Tree, which is the 'light and eyes' of the Forest's Spirit Tree. Without Sein, the Spirit Tree could not sustain the three elements supporting Nibel's balance: Waters, Winds, and Warmth. The forest withered, leading to the deaths of Naru. The extinction of the Gumon clan is not canonically confirmed as a direct result of Kuro's theft. Kuro's theft caused the cataclysmic event that Ori must undo.

Origins and Tragedy
Kuro is depicted as a giant, shadowy owl inhabiting the forest of Nibel. Initially presented as hostile toward the protagonist Ori, her aggression stems from a profound personal loss rather than inherent malice. The narrative reveals that when Ori was lost after falling from the Spirit Tree during a storm, the tree released a flash of light to search for the spirit. This illumination burned and destroyed every one of Kuro's newly hatched young while she was out gathering food. This cataclysmic event left her with only a single remaining egg. Her subsequent actions were driven by a desperate determination to prevent this tragedy from happening again to her unborn child. This backstory establishes her not merely as an antagonist, but as a grieving parent whose wrath is the direct result of the Spirit Tree's attempt to locate Ori.
The Theft and Forest Decay
To safeguard her remaining egg from similar harm, Kuro took decisive action that destabilized the entire ecosystem of Nibel. She extracted the core situated atop the Spirit Tree to prevent it from emitting light again. Unbeknownst to her, this object was truly Sein, the small orb representing the light and eyes of the tree. Without its core, the Spirit Tree could not sustain the three essential elements required for balance: Waters, Winds, and Warmth. Consequently, the forest began to wither, leading to a cataclysmic event where Naru died of starvation and other clans were wiped out. Kuro's theft was the catalyst for the game's central conflict, forcing Ori to journey through the dying world to recover the light elements. Her possession of Sein directly caused the environmental collapse that players must navigate throughout the platform-adventure experience.
Climax at Mount Horu
The final confrontation occurs after Ori restores the Warmth element within the volcano known as Mount Horu. As flames from the volcano expand outward, Kuro assaults both Ori and Sein in a final bid to protect her nest. During this intense battle, Naru arrives having been separated from Gumo. She steps in to shield Ori from the owl's assault. Witnessing this act of protection causes Kuro to soften, as she remembers the pain associated with losing her previous children. As the fire from Mount Horu spreads toward her remaining egg, she takes Sein back to the Spirit Tree. The Spirit Tree's flash of light dissipates the fire and restores the forest, but Kuro is destroyed by the light.
Sacrifice and Legacy
Upon returning Sein to the Spirit Tree, the tree emits a flash of bright light that successfully dissipates the fire spreading from Mount Horu. This restoration brings balance back to Nibel, yet Kuro meets her end due to the brilliance of that illumination. Her death ensures the forest begins to flourish once more, allowing new spirits to be born at the foot of the Spirit Tree. Despite her demise, a legacy remains through her last egg. Naru takes this remaining egg home after watching Ori from afar with Gumo. The story concludes with the egg beginning to hatch just in time for Naru to return. This ending suggests that while Kuro perished, her lineage survives within the restored forest.
