Wunderle was raised in Mason City, Illinois, as the son of famous archery coach Terry Wunderle. He began archery at age five and competed extensively through childhood. After high school, he attended Texas A&M University, graduating in 2002 with a degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences. At the 2000 Summer Olympics, he narrowly defeated Magnus Petersson of Sweden 108–107 in the semifinals before losing the gold medal match 113–106 to Simon Fairweather of Australia. He also helped the U.S. team defeat Russia in a tie-breaker to win bronze. In 2004, he won his first three elimination matches before losing 109–108 to eventual gold medalist Marco Galiazzo in the quarterfinals, placing 8th overall; the U.S. men's team finished 4th. At the 2006 Gold Cup, he defeated French archer Pierre Georgeault in the 16th of finals and took third place against Crispin Duenas of Canada. At the 2008 Summer Olympics, he ranked 41st with 652 points, beat Eduardo Vélez in the first round, advanced past Ilario Di Buò in a shoot-off (19–17), defeated Im Dong-Hyun 113–111, and was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Juan René Serrano. In the team event with Brady Ellison and Butch Johnson, the U.S. placed 10th in the ranking round and lost to Chinese Taipei 222–218 in the first round.
