Carpool Karaoke

A car-bound sing-along segment turned global TV series.

Carpool Karaoke is a recurring segment on The Late Late Show with James Corden where the host drives famous musical guests while they sing along to their songs.[1] The segment became popular through viral YouTube videos, with an Adele episode amassing 42 million views in five days.[2] In 2020 it was revealed that the car is sometimes towed rather than driven by Corden for safety reasons.[3][4]

Making and release

Corden's jumping-off point for Carpool Karaoke originated with late Wham! singer George Michael.[5] No musicians were interested initially, but when Corden showed the George Michael clip to Mariah Carey, she agreed to pioneer the show.[6] In 2016, Apple Music and CBS Television Studios announced a deal for a television series adaptation.[7] The series, Carpool Karaoke: The Series, premiered on August 8, 2017, exclusively on Apple Music.[8][9]

The series features 16 different hosts rather than a single host.[7][5] Robert Llewelyn first introduced the Carpool format in 2009 through his own podcast titled Carpool.[10] Within the 2014 BBC One documentary When Corden Met Barlow, a Carpool Karaoke sequence lasting 6 minutes and 45 seconds featuring Gary Barlow was incorporated.[11] Ben Winston served as the director for that documentary.[11]

What the cited sources add

Winston said they received requests from movie stars to do Carpool Karaoke on The Late Late Show, which inspired the Apple Music series.[5] Corden explained that the idea came from Los Angeles traffic and the carpool lane.[12] Filming involves a convoy driving around LA for almost three hours.[12] Corden and his producers generally keep the nuts and bolts of Carpool Karaoke under wraps.[12]

During filming with Red Hot Chili Peppers, singer Anthony Kiedis saved a baby's life by performing CPR after a woman ran out holding a non-breathing child.[13][14]
