Gameplay

Players mimic the on-screen coach’s choreography to a chosen song using the game's associated smartphone app; Nintendo Switch players may also use the console's Joy-Con controllers. The 2023 Edition was not released for Xbox One or PlayStation 4, dropping support for Kinect, PlayStation Camera, and PlayStation Move. The user interface has been redesigned to resemble streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, HBO Max, Paramount+, and Peacock, all within a single Just Dance hub. This is the first Just Dance title developed with the Unity engine instead of Ubisoft's in-house UbiArt Framework, which had been used since Just Dance 2014. A new online multiplayer feature supports up to six players in a private group with cross-play at launch; the Xbox Series X/S version received cross-play support later. Dancer cards were overhauled: avatars now show pictures of the coaches rather than their heads, and emotes indicate how the player feels after each song. Score feedback animations can be customized and toggled. Victory celebrations appear when a player finishes a song in single player or wins in multiplayer. Cross-progression allows progress across multiple consoles. On October 9, Workout Mode and Challenge Mode were added as part of the 2024 Edition Celebration Event.

Story mode

The game includes a story mode-based playlist titled Enter the Danceverses, a first for the series. It follows Sara, who is transported from the real world to the Danceverses by Wanderlust. Together they must stop the evil witch Night Swan from conquering the Danceverses, recruiting expert dancers Brezziana, Mihaly, and Jack Rose (Night Swan's son). They defeat Night Swan and her mind-controlled soldiers in a dance battle; the soldiers are freed, but Night Swan escapes. The group celebrates before Wanderlust sends Sara back to the real world. A follow-up story, Dance with the Swan, is part of 2024 Edition.

Soundtrack

Just Dance 2023 Edition includes a selection of songs. A new subscription service called Just Dance+ launched alongside the game, offering access to a streaming library of 150 songs at launch from previous Just Dance games, plus new exclusive tracks. Songs ported from earlier games and service-exclusive tracks are added through frequent updates. Exclusive songs are listed separately.

Future

In a November 2022 interview, brand director Amelie Louvet confirmed that 2023 Edition would be the final annual main-series installment, with all further content added through online updates. Creative director Matthew Tomkinson later stated that yearly installments would continue as annual song packs rather than new games, and players owning 2023 Edition and future Editions can play together online. Subsequent song packs include 2024 Edition (October 2023), 2025 Edition (October 2024), and 2026 Edition (October 2025).
