Gameplay

The game uses an interface resembling a desktop operating system like Windows 9x, with a fictional web browser called Hypnospace Explorer. Players investigate assigned cases by exploring web pages and searching for objectionable content, aided by hints from page content. HypnoCoin, earned by reporting cases, is exchanged for downloadable programs, virtual pets, wallpapers, and story-advancing content. The soundtrack includes musical pastiches of era bands from in-game groups such as Seepage, Fre3zer, and the Chowder Man.

Plot

Hypnospace is an internet service from Merchantsoft accessed via a headband running HypnOS during sleep. On November 5, 1999, a user becomes an Enforcer moderator. After handling cases, co-founder Dylan Merchant releases an alpha of his game Outlaw, which bricks the Enforcer's headband. On November 26, the Enforcer finds Dylan's FLIST page and reports it, leading to removal from duty. Reinstated on December 31, the Enforcer helps with the Y2000 Mindcrash hack by Timothy Randall Stevens. Dylan pushes another Outlaw version that crashes all headbands, causing four to six deaths. Timothy is blamed and imprisoned, and Hypnospace shuts down. In the present, the Enforcer joins the Hypnospace Archival Project, where Samantha Clausson proves Merchantsoft's negligence and Dylan admits to framing Timothy.

Reception

The game received generally positive reviews on Metacritic. It was nominated for the Tin Pan Alley Award for Best Music, the Statue of Liberty Award for Best World, and the Herman Melville Award for Best Writing at the New York Game Awards. PC Gamer called it a reminder of when the internet felt like a cool underground club. TheGamer and Eurogamer noted the sense of nostalgia the game brings.

Follow-ups

A sequel, Dreamsettler, and a spinoff first-person shooter, Slayers X: Terminal Aftermath: Vengance of the Slayer, were announced in 2022. Slayers X, set in-universe as a creation by the character Zane, was released on June 1, 2023, for Windows and Xbox Series X and S. Dreamsettler, planned between 2003 and 2005 with the player as a private investigator, was cancelled on June 20, 2025.
