Development

The game was created by a small team of three members from Târgu Mureș, Transylvania, Romania. A Kickstarter campaign in 2016 exceeded its goal of 39,270 CHF, raising 53,862 CHF from nearly 2,000 backers. Inspiration came from the Cthulhu Mythos, 1990s LucasArts games, and the art direction of Disney movies and Studio Ghibli works. At launch, the game was translated into 12 languages and featured over 70 English-speaking voice actors, including Doug Cockle and Amber Lee Connors.

Reception

According to Metacritic, Gibbous - A Cthulhu Adventure received mixed or average reviews based on 14 reviews. Teodor Nechita of Softpedia gave 4 out of 5 stars, comparing the atmosphere to Tim Burton and stating that point-and-click fans should not overlook it. Joe Keeley of Adventure Gamers gave 3 out of 5 stars, praising the art design, animation, humor, voice acting of two main characters, and puzzles, but criticizing the convoluted story, unnatural dialogue, grating voice acting of the third main character and some side characters, and the unsatisfactory ending.

Sequels

In July 2021, Stuck in Attic announced Near-Mage, set in the same Kittehverse. Though not a direct sequel, it ties up narrative threads from Gibbous and features returning characters. Players control Illy Vraja, who visits the Transylvanian Institute for Magick and learns spells and potion brewing to help characters in Sighișoara and the mythical town of Rakus. A Kickstarter campaign in August 2021 exceeded its 25,250 € goal in under 24 hours. Near-Mage was released on May 27, 2025. A focus tool called Hocus Focus, sharing locations and assets from Near-Mage, was released on August 7, 2026.
